Description
Waterholes - small pans in Chobe National Park with a herd of elephants (tiny dots on the pans). These are natural filled with rain water. Depending on rains the water can stay there for some months - perhaps till June. It is because of waterholes like these that the animals, especially elephants can survive in the bush far from any permanent water source. Elephants can go into the desert interior for 300 or more kilometres, knowing all the waterholes scattered in the vast dry desert. When this water dries up, the elephants, and other species, have to move towards the rivers - Okavango or Chobe and stay there till the next rainy season. It is an annual spectacular and difficult migration in search of food and water.
